Cyber Security Awareness - Course Overview

Overview

Cyber crime is highly disruptive, and can cause significant damage to an organisation. For example, it may cause downtime or affect the organisation's reputation and operations. A successful cyber attack may also put an organisation in breach of several pieces of legislation, such as the UK General Data Protection Regulation and the Network and Information Systems Regulations 2018, which may result in additional costs.

Providing cyber security training to staff, and making them aware of how they can maintain good cyber and network security, is an essential step in preventing cyber crime and the significant costs associated with it.

This course covers:

What cyber security and cyber attacks are.
Why cyber security is important.
The main cyber threats that organisations face, such as viruses and ransomware.
How individuals and organisations can protect themselves from cyber attacks.

Duration

It takes approximately 1 hour to complete the course. This can be spread out over multiple sessions or completed in a single session, and there is no time limit for completion.

Assessment

All candidates must complete a multiple choice assessment after working through the training material. The candidate will be asked 12 multiple choice questions and need to answer a minimum of 9 correctly to pass. Candidates will be given instant feedback after completing the assessment stating whether they have passed or failed. The assessment can be retaken as many times as is required to pass at no additional cost.

Module 1 - Introduction to cyber security

This module explores:

What cyber security is, and why it is important.
The main UK data protection legislation, and how it affects cyber security.
Who is targeted by cyber attacks, and who carries them out.

Module 2 - Cyber security threats

This module explores:

The four main stages of a cyber attack.
The main cyber security threats that can affect an organisation, such as DDoS attacks and man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks.
How the main forms of cyber attack work.

Module 3 - Individual measures

This module explores some of the measures that an individual can take to protect themselves and their devices from cyber attacks, including:

Using strong passwords.
Enabling two-factor authentication.
Being aware of phishing attacks.

Module 4 - Organisational measures

This is an optional module that explores some examples of measures that can be taken to improve an organisation's cyber security, including:

Using up-to-date malware protection.
Applying software updates and patches as soon as possible.
Maintaining an appropriate monitoring system.

It also explores a case study provided by the National Cyber Security Centre that illustrates the importance of organisational cyber security.

Cyber Security Awareness - Accreditation and Certification

CPD Certificate

Successful candidates will receive a CPD Certificate and 1 CPD Credit.

This cyber security awareness training course certificate has no expiry date because there is no formally recognised period of validity for this type of course. The HSE recommends refresher training is carried out whenever it is felt necessary. Safety registration bodies such as CHAS, SafeContractor, ConstructionLine & SMAS and other members of the SSiP scheme recommend that most re-training is done every 3 years. We would recommend refreshing knowledge as and when legislation or guidance changes applicable to these regulations.
