Abrasive Wheels Safety Training - Target Audience

Statistics show most accidents involving abrasive wheels occur because of an unsafe system of work or operator error. There are obvious dangers of wheel breakage or contact with a running wheel as well as other, less obvious health risks, such as vibration, noise and dust.

This online course is a general awareness course for workers in the construction and trades industry who use portable tools that have an abrasive or cutting wheel, commonly known as angle grinders, cut-off saws, disc cutters, skill saws, Stihl saws, con saws or ‘whizzers’. The course is designed to satisfy the training and awareness requirements of relevant legislation and regulations including HSG 17 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

This course can be used by people working in high risk environments as a general introduction alongside suitable supplementary, hazard-specific training.

Meets the training requirements of HSE, HSG 17, CHAS, SafeContractor, ConstructionLine, Exor, SMAS and other SSIPs.

Abrasive Wheels Online Health & Safety Training Course

Abrasive Wheels Safety Training - Course Objectives

Portable abrasive wheel tools can go under many names such as angle grinders, cut-off saws, disc cutters, skill saws, Stihl saws, con saws or ‘whizzers’. The course covers the obvious dangers from wheel breakage or contact with a running wheel but also details the less obvious health risks, such as vibration, noise and dust.

This online course will provide delegates with an understanding of the main risks associated with using portable abrasive wheels and ways to minimise and control the risks. The course also provides details of the various health and safety laws and regulations that impose a duty on both employees and employers to manage the risks associated with abrasive wheels.

After completing the course candidates will:

  • Be aware of the dangers of using abrasive wheels.
  • Have knowledge of the legal and regulatory framework concerned with abrasive wheels.
  • Be aware of the precautions to take before starting work with an abrasive wheel.
  • Be aware of how to safely manage and use a portable abrasive wheel machine or cut-off saw.

Abrasive Wheels Awareness Course - Structure

The course comprises 3 interactive modules and a final assessment. Module 1 covers types of discs and wheels and the legal and regulatory guidelines. Module 2 describes the risks and Module 3 discusses how to manage the risks. More information on each module is detailed below. Links to recommended reading and additional resources are provided within the training modules. These links are not mandatory and will not be tested for in the final assessment.

Duration

It takes approximately 50 minutes to complete the course in full. This can be spread out over multiple sessions or completed in a single session. There is no time limit for completion.

Assessment

All candidates must complete a multiple choice assessment after working through the training material. The candidate will be asked 16 multiple choice questions, randomly chosen from a larger question pool, and need to answer a minimum of 12 correctly to pass. Candidates will be given instant feedback after completing the assessment stating whether they have passed or failed. The assessment can be re-taken as many times as is required to pass at no additional cost.
