Patient Moving and Handling - Target Audience

Those working in a health and social care setting are often required to complete manual handling tasks, such as moving equipment and assisting service users. It is important that these tasks are carried out correctly, as bad moving and handling practice can lead to back pain, musculoskeletal disorders and unnecessary injuries to service users.

Ensuring that good manual handling practice is observed can be achieved in part by providing regular moving and handling training to staff that covers safely moving people. This will help to reduce the risk of injury occurring and is required to comply with health and safety legislation, such as the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992.

This course is suitable for anyone working with organisations in the health and social care sectors, such as the NHS or local authority care services, who regularly use handling equipment and partake in the handling of people.

The Skills for Health Core Skills Training Framework requires all staff who will be involved in load handling and patient handling activities to undergo additional practical training. This course must be accompanied by relevant in-person training before any of the techniques covered are carried out in the workplace.

Patient Moving and Handling - Course Overview

Overview

Maintaining safe moving and handling technique is essential while moving and handling people in order to avoid accidents and prevent injury to both the person being moved and the employee. It also helps to avoid the development of musculoskeletal disorders, a series of conditions that account for around 40% of sickness absences in the NHS and cost the service approximately £400 million a year.

After completing this course, candidates will:

  • Understand good manual handling technique and why its use is important.
  • Be aware of how to assist a patient with sitting, standing and walking.
  • Know the main manoeuvres carried out on a patient in bed.
  • Have knowledge of techniques for handling a person who is falling or has fallen.
  • Understand the different types of hoists and slings that are available and how to use them correctly.

Duration

It takes approximately 3 hours to complete the course in full. This can be spread out over multiple sessions or completed in a single session. There is no time limit for completion.

Assessment

All candidates must complete a multiple choice assessment after working through the training material. The candidate will be asked 16 multiple choice questions and need to answer a minimum of 12 correctly to pass. Candidates will be given instant feedback after completing the assessment stating whether they have passed or failed. The assessment can be retaken as many times as is required to pass at no additional cost.
